Higher performance – and extra 5 horsepower – and a new RS model are the headline acts for Triumph’s retro naked performance model, the Speed Twin 1200.
Changes to the chassis and the introduction of new technology – notably cornering ABS and traction control – are also included for improved handling and dynamic performance.
Changes to the standard Speed Twin include a new fuel tank, engine casings, throttle body covers, headlight and bracket, seat, mufflers and wheels. Ergonomically Triumph has made the standard speed Twin a little roomier by lifting the handlebars nearly 18mm and moving the footpegs back 13.4mm.
The forks, Marzocchi 43mm USD units, have been upgraded, while the rear shocks are twin piggyback units from the same manufacturer.
There’s two riding modes – the RS gets three. The new high-spec model also get Ohlins rear shocks, a quickshifter, a sportier riding position including higher pegs and lower bars, Metzeler Racetec RR K3 tyres, Brembo Stylma calipers and different colours.
The standard Speed Twin will be available in Crystal While & Sapphire black, Carnival Red & Sapphire Black or Aluminium silver. The RS comes in Baja Orange & Sapphire Black or Sapphire Black.
Triumph’s Chief Product Officer Steve Sargent said: “The new Speed Twin 1200 RS is more focused, more engaging and with even sharper responses. It’s designed for riders who want the absolute best in dynamic performance, with classic sporty looks.
“The updates to the new Speed Twin 1200 are a significant evolution for this much-loved model, and as always, we’ve made sure we retain the superior handling and classic style that everyone admires, while introducing extra power and technology that improves the riding experience seamlessly.”
The new tank is more sculpted, with raked lines and deep front cutouts, and there is a new flip-up filler cap. The side panels are simpler and styled to integrate into the new minimal throttle body covers with their brushed aluminium finisher.
Many classic-inspired details have been refined and updated, including new black powder-coated engine casings, which are now leaner and more angular. More compact silencers add to the timeless beauty of the uninterrupted exhaust run.
The elegant round headlight is now an LED unit with a new DRL light signature, with a new brushed aluminium bezel and stylish cast aluminium finishers.
The stunning one-piece bench seat has been reprofiled to be shallower and more sculpted, matching the sporty styling, and is narrower at the front, facilitating an easier stand over position for riders. The RS seat gains a sporty and stylish napped finish with exceptional stitch detailing.
New cast aluminium wheels perfectly complement the new bodywork with seven pairs of slim spokes angled in a sporty turbine pattern.
There’s also new instruments and a USB-C charging port.
Road Rider’s take
The Speed Twin is a fun bike, with its retro good looks and soulful parallel twin engine… but it’s never been a powerhouse, limited to 100 horses, and an extra five isn’t going to set the world on fire. However, high performance isn’t want this bike is all about, despite the word ’Speed’ in the name.
No, this is about dialling in a comfortable pace on a winding road and holding that pace, taking the corners in a flowing style, preserving you speed and cranking from side to side through flowing turns.
If that’s your idea of a sporty ride, the Speed Twin and especially its mate the Speed Twin RS are likely to please.
Pricing hasn’t been announced. Bikes should be in showrooms early in the new year.
